How to use it

Two ways in

Depending on where you are starting from.

You are a company

Open Operations and search your own name. You will see every school within 50km of your site, how many learners they serve, and how they performed at matric. Then open the Map and search that district to see them plotted.

You are a school or district

Open the Map, find your area, and turn on the operations layer. Any diamond within reach is a company with a community investment obligation nearby. Open Company Commitments to read what they have already undertaken to do.

Reading the numbers

What the terms mean

These appear throughout the tool. Anywhere you see a dotted underline, hover it for the same explanation in place.

QuintileEvery public school is placed in a wealth band from Quintile 1 (poorest) to Quintile 5 (wealthiest), based on the income, unemployment and literacy levels of the area it serves. Q1 and Q2 schools are the poorest and receive the most state funding per learner.
Q1+Q2 %The share of schools inside this catchment that sit in Quintile 1 or 2 β€” the poorest two bands. A high figure means most schools nearby serve poor communities.
No-fee %The share of schools charging no fees. No-fee status is set nationally and tracks closely with quintile, so it works as a cross-check on the quintile figure.
Catchment (50km)Every school within 50km of the operation, measured as a straight line. For renewable energy this matches the legal definition of the host community; for mining and agriculture it is a reasonable daily travel distance.
Matric pass rateThe National Senior Certificate pass rate β€” the share of Grade 12 candidates who passed. Averaged across all schools in the catchment that report results.
Schools below 60%How many schools in the catchment had a matric pass rate below 60% in 2025. A count of struggling schools, rather than an average.
LearnersTotal enrolment across all schools in the catchment, from the 2025 national school register.
Regulatory hookThe legal or contractual instrument that obliges this company to invest in its surrounding communities. Mining and renewable energy have binding obligations; agriculture does not.
Geo confidenceWhether the map pin is a verified location or an estimate. Town-centroid means we have placed the pin in the middle of the nearest town because we do not yet have the real coordinates.
TrendThe change in matric pass rate between 2023 and 2025, in percentage points. Green is improving, red is declining.
Dash (β€”)A dash means the source data is unusable or absent for that field β€” not that the value is zero.
Reading the numbers

Two things to know

The headline finding Agriculture has the greatest need and the weakest obligation. Renewable energy is the reverse. Farming operations sit in crowded, poor, rural districts, but have no legal duty to invest. Solar and wind farms have a clear contractual duty but sit in the sparsely populated Northern Cape, where 50km reaches very few schools. Three mining operations alone reach 684,810 learners in the poorest schools β€” 5.3Γ— more than all 37 renewable sites combined (130,011).
Catchments overlap β€” read totals carefully A school within 50km of two operations appears in both catchments. Adding the school or learner columns together therefore counts those schools twice. Every sector figure below is given both ways; the unique column is the one to quote.

Look up any operation to see the schools within 50km of it β€” how many, how many learners, how many sit in the poorest quintiles, and how they performed at matric. Search by company, province or district.

Reading the Q1+Q2 % column

Every public school in South Africa is placed in a wealth band from Quintile 1 (poorest) to Quintile 5 (wealthiest). The band is set by the income, unemployment and literacy levels of the surrounding community, not by the school itself. Schools in Quintiles 1 and 2 serve the poorest communities, receive the largest state subsidy per learner, and are no-fee by national policy.

Q1+Q2 % is the share of schools within 50km of an operation that fall into those two bands. If an operation shows 80%, then four out of every five schools near it serve poor communities. It is a measure of the surrounding community's need β€” not of school quality, and not of how those schools perform. For performance, read the Matric 25 column alongside it.

Social & Labour Plans

Company Commitments

Social and Labour Plans are public documents. They set out, by law, what each mining company has committed to spend on education, in which communities, and over what period. They are the single most useful starting point for any approach.

Coverage is incomplete We were not able to obtain every Social and Labour Plan. SLPs are lodged with the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy and are public documents, but they are not published in a single central register β€” some companies post them, some supply them on request, and some are not readily available at all. Of the 46 companies listed here, 43 have a document we could locate and link to; for the remainder the commitments shown are drawn from annual reports, integrated reports and sustainability disclosures rather than the SLP itself.

A blank or thin entry therefore means we could not find the document β€” it does not mean the company has made no commitment, and it should not be read as a compliance judgement. Anyone who holds a plan we have missed is welcome to point us to it.

Data gapSubject-level results β€” Mathematics and Physical Science in particular β€” are not in the DBE School Performance Report. They are published separately in the National Schools Subjects Report. Until that file is loaded, STEM analysis is unavailable and this tab shows overall pass rates only. The join key and pipeline are built and tested; the layer will populate when the data arrives.

Known limitations Renewable energy and agricultural sites are located to the nearest town rather than surveyed plant coordinates, so their catchments are indicative. 301 schools (1.2% of the national register) have no usable coordinates and are excluded from the map. Subject-level results for Mathematics and Physical Science are not yet included.

Catchment radius

50km, applied uniformly. For renewable energy this is not an analytical choice β€” the REIPPPP requires IPPs to assess the needs of communities within a 50km radius of the plant, so the catchment matches the regulatory definition of the host community.
